I turned this thrifted Kavu bag into a muted navy colored bag.

The pink was very bright and unfortunately did not match any of my clothes. Although, I love the Kavu Cross Body Bags this one was thrifted at a great deal but it needed a make-under.

Dying Vinyl and Tough Canvas Materials

In order for the dye to saturate the material I added the recommended amounts of salt, soap and vinegar.

Rit Navy Dye

Single Color Dyes are about $4.00

Add Soap, Vinegar and Salt and Mix Well

The Bag Soaked in the Dye Solution Overnight.

I also used a large stone to hold the bag underwater while it was saturating.

The last step after dying is to rinse and wash in the washing machine with an old towel.

Tip: Don't add more than a few drops of laundry soap to your final wash. Adding a regular amount of soap to the load will strip the dye out.

I really like how it turned out! This bag is ready to be my summer bike riding tote.

What do you think? Would you consider looking past colors when thrifting and do a custom dye project on your apparel and up-cycled items?
